Caput Mortuum
Variously spelled Caput Mortum and Caput Mortem.
1. The term in Latin means 'death's head' and was derived originally from alchemy, where it was used to denote the residue after an alchemical operation such as distillation or sublimation; hence anything from which all that made it valuable has been removed. The worthless remnant.
2. The head; also, a knoblike protuberance or capitulum. The top or superior part of a thing.
3. The name given to a purple variety of haematite iron oxide pigment, also known as Cardinal purple, used in oil paints and paper dyes. It was a very popular color for painting the robes of religious figures and important personages (e.g. art patrons). The name for this pigment may have come from the alchemical usage, since iron oxide (rust) is the useless residue of oxidization. It was originally a byproduct of sulfuric acid manufacture during the 17th & 18th centuries, and was possibly an early form of the copperas process used for the manufacture of Venetian red and copperas red. Also an alternative name for Mummy brown or Egyptian brown, a pigment that was originally made in the 16th and 17th centuries from ground-up mummies, and whose use was discontinued in the 19th century when artists became aware of its ingredients.

As you may have noticed, Occultopedia is being updated.
Navigation areas are completed, but the word definition pages are not. The
layout in these pages might not look as good as they should. Updating them
may take a while, so please, be patient and understanding. I am only one
person working on this site in my spare time.
As soon as these updates are concluded I will begin setting up the
Forums, so we can all discuss the
occult, paranormal and extraordinary, and whatever else we please.
Registration will be required.
Occultopedia's images and art are also undergoing an adjustment to
