| | | | | Boggard
Alternatively Boggart, Bogart, and Bogan.
In British folklore, the name given to a supernatural evil spirit, goblin, ghost or specter, who usually haunts a particular place or residence.
The Boggart is a household spirit who causes things to disappear, milk to sour and dogs to go lame. Always malevolent, it will follow its victims, usually a whole family, whenever and wherever they flee. It generally likes to hide in dark and enclosed places, such as cupboards, small cellars, under beds, within walls, or hollow trees.
In Northern England it was believed that the Boggart should never be named, for when it was given a name, it could not be reasoned with, placated or controlled. This belief would appear to be absurd, since according to legend, named or not, Boggarts were always extremely vicious.
There are many superstitions and traditions associated with the Boggart. It is said that it crawls into people's beds at night to intrusively put a clammy hand on their faces or to pull on their ears, and sometimes to also strip the bed sheets off them. A horseshoe hung at the entrance door of the household is said to keep this pesky creature away.
In the popular book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Mrs. Weasly grieves for all her children and family, including Harry, when a Boggart reveals to her a vision of her worst fear: their deaths.

As you may have noticed, Occultopedia is being updated.
Navigation areas are completed, but the word definition pages are not. The
layout in these pages might not look as good as they should. Updating them
may take a while, so please, be patient and understanding. I am only one
person working on this site in my spare time.
As soon as these updates are concluded I will begin setting up the
Forums, so we can all discuss the
occult, paranormal and extraordinary, and whatever else we please.
Registration will be required.
Occultopedia's images and art are also undergoing an adjustment to
Flash based graphics. This process may take some time as well, so again, be
patient and understanding.
