Crusades

       Crusaders

Wars undertaken by Christians in the late Middle Ages to secure the right of Christian pilgrims to visit the Holy Sepulchre and to recover the Holy Land from its Muslim conquerors.

The name is derived from the cross that the Crusaders wore on their dress. Idea of chivalry as well as hopes of material gain were prominent. Acording to Matthew Paris, each nation had its special color, which was red for France, white for England, green for Flanders, blue or azure for Italy, and gules (red) for Spain. Scotland had a St. Andrew's cross, and the Knights Templar, red on white.

"God wills it!" That was the battle cry of the thousands of Christians who joined crusades to free the Holy Land from the Turks. From 1096 to 1270 there were eight major crusades and two children's crusades, both in the year 1212. Only the First and Third Crusades were successful. In the long history of the Crusades, thousands of knights, soldiers, merchants, and peasants lost their lives on the march or in battle.

Ancient Evidence: Mysteries of Jesus -- DVD

Join the Ancient Evidence detectives as they investigate what may be the most famous murder in history. Begin with a look at the key figures surrounding Jesus of Nazareth's death - Herod Antipas and Pontius Pilate. King Herod had influential dissenter John the Baptist beheaded, but what roll did he play in the death of Jesus? Considered a modern-day icon for the virtues of forgiveness, Mary Magdalene is traditionally thought to have been a reformed prostitute in her time. Examine evidence that challenges this centuries-old depiction - she may not have been a prostitute at all.

Ancient Evidence: Mysteries of the Apostles
~ DVD ~

Ancient Evidence: Mysteries of the Apostles

Though Paul wasn't an original member of the 12 disciples - he was later admitted as a "special" apostle - he was nonetheless a major figure in the early Christian church. He was one of Jesus' closest companions, the unofficial spokesman for the 12 disciples and even a leader of the Christian community for a time. And yet this highly regarded man - who was eventually killed for his beliefs - started off as a lowly fisherman in Galilee. Follow the story of Peter and his rise from the humblest of beginnings to his standing as one of the most influential members of Jesus' ministry.

Forbidden Archeology: The Full Unabridged Edition
by Michael A. Cremo

Forbidden Archeology: The Full Unabridged Edition

Over the centuries, researchers have found bones and artifacts proving that humans like us have existed for millions of years. Mainstream science, however, has suppressed these facts. Prejudices based on current scientific theory act as a knowledge filter, giving us a picture of prehistory that is largely incorrect. Forbidden Archeology is a work of thoroughgoing scholarship and intellectual adventure.

Lost Cities of Ancient Lemuria and the Pacific
by David Hatcher Childress

Lost Cities of Ancient Lemuria and the Pacific

David Hatcher Childress's book looks at the Lemuria story, the lost continent of the Pacific or maybe Indian ocean, with great imagination and intellectual curiosity. For the first time since the 1930s he approached the subject in detail, and he is not afraid to take on many aspects of the story, however quirky, with an open mind. Moreover, I liked the physical descriptions of the places he visited, and the book can be read as an offbeat travelogue as well as alternative archaeology. Recommended reading for lost continent buffs!

Atlantis, the Antediluvian World
by Ignatius Donnelly

Atlantis, the Antediluvian World

The most important book of its time (1882) on the subject of Atlantis. The author claims there once existed in the Atlantic Ocean, opposite the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, a large island, which was the remnant of an Atlantic continent, and known to the ancient world as Atlantis, that Atlantis was the region where man first rose from a state of barbarism to civilization, that the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greeks, the Phoenicians, the Hindus, and the Scandinavians were simply the kings, queens, and heroes of Atlantis, that the mythologies of Egypt and Peru represented the original religion of Atlantis, which was sun-worship, etc., etc. Illustrated with photographs.

Secrets And Mysteries Of The World
by Sylvia Browne

Secrets And Mysteries Of The World

Everything from Atlantis to Bigfoot to the Bermuda Triangle is dusted off in this rambling rehash of pop mythology. Browne (Adventures of a Psychic) serves up perfunctory accounts of folktales, New Age origin myths and tabloid sensations, embellishing them with her desultory psychic vibes ("historians say that Stonehenge dates to about 3000 B.C., but I felt when I was there that it was more like 5000 B.C.") and the nattering asides—"Francine said there are forty-four universes"—of her "spirit guide." Influenced by Francine and theorist Erich Van Daniken, who believes astronauts existed in ancient times, Browne ascribes most unexplained phenomena to extraterrestrials from the Andromeda galaxy, who are responsible for the Pyramids (built with "anti-gravity rods"), crop circles (formed by aliens to "get their message across") and the blood-sucking Chupacabra ("a creature from another planet that was put here for research purposes and sometimes runs amok").

Mysteries of the Unexplained
by H. G. Carlson

Mysteries of the Unexplained

Venturing into the darkest corners of recorded history, this fully illustrated guide to the paranormal uncovers a wealth of bizarre phenomena. This is a great book. It has a little bit of everything in it! Everything unexplained that is.... A wonderful read and a great addition to any serious researcher's collection.

Unexplained! Strange Sightings, Incredible Occurrences & Puzzling Physical Phenomena
by Jerome Clark

Unexplained! Strange Sightings, Incredible Occurrences & Puzzling Physical Phenomena

Clark's new, expanded edition of "Unexplained!" is one of the finest overviews of paranormal mysteries available today. I have been a fan of Clark's since his "Creatures of the Outer Edge" of 1978 (co-authored with his occasional writing partner, the equally dependable Loren Coleman). Clark's clear and professional writing style has only improved over the years. A sly, very subtle wit frequently emerges ("perhaps wisely, he takes this vague idea no further"). Although it's evident Clark's mind is open to most of the phenomena explored in the book, for the most part he keeps his opinions to himself, opting instead to let his reader make his or her own judgment based on the information available.

The Mars Mystery: The Secret Connection Between Earth and the Red Planet
by Graham Hancock

The Mars Mystery: The Secret Connection Between Earth and the Red Planet

The Mars Mystery: The Secret Connection Between An asteroid transformed Mars from a lush planet with rivers and oceans into a bleak and icy hell. Is Earth condemned to the same fate, or can we protect ourselves and our planet from extinction? In his most riveting and revealing book yet, Graham Hancock examines the evidence that the barren Red Planet was once home to a lush environment of flowing rivers, lakes, and oceans. Could Mars have sustained life and civilization?

Atlantis: Insights from a Lost Civilization
by Shirley Andrews

Atlantis: Insights from a Lost Civilization

"Shirley Andrews, in an illustrative line of prehistorians (Herodotus, Plato, Ignatius Donnolly, Edgar Cayce, Manly Palmer Hall, and Zecharia Sitchin) offers the most comprehensive and accessible synthesis of knowledge about the reality of Atlantis. She has taken it from the realm of legend to the edges of frontier science." --- Paul Ward, author, Solarian Legacy: Metascience & a New Renaissance.

The Mystery of the Earth's Mantle

by A. Malakhov, David Sobolev

The Mystery of the Earth's Mantle

Boiling liquid magma or super hard matter? Inconceivably high temperatures or cold neighboring on absolute zero? What are the depths of the Earth like? What mysteries does its mantle conceal? Science cannot as yet give the exact answers to these questions, though myriads of different hypotheses have been put forth. This is a fascinating book about the romance of prospecting, about the pertinacious investigations of geologists studying the inside of our planet. The author, Professor Anatoly Malakhov, D.Sc. (Geology and Mineralogy) was well known to the Soviet reading public for his previous popular-science books A Hundred Professions of a Geologist and Stories about Stones.

Mysterious America: The Revised Edition
by Loren Coleman

Mysterious America: The Revised Edition

Loren Coleman's highly-praised, 1983 classic work, Mysterious America, has been thoroughly updated for this revised edition. This new edition contains an invaluable, never-before-published index; two completely new chapters, "Giant Catfish" and "Minnesota Iceman"; a new list, "The American Lion," with 141 entries; several extensively rewritten chapters, "A Case Study: The Dover Demon," "The Teleporting Animals and Magnolia," "The Phantom Panthers," "Maned Mystery Cats," "Mystery Kangaroos and Devil Monkeys," "Eastern Bigfoot: Momo and Marked Hominids"; and new material and updates to several chapters, "Devil Names and Fortean Places," "Alligators in the Sewers," "Giant Snakes," "Lake Monsters," "Champ," "The Jersey Devil," "The Phantom Clown."

Secrets in the Fields: The Science and Mysticism of Crop Circles
by Freddy Silva

Secrets in the Fields: The Science and Mysticism of Crop Circles

Silva, who has worked in graphic design and advertising for most of his professional life, conveys his keen passion for earth mysticism in this probing examination of crop circles. He examines the history of crop circles, human interactions with them, their probable implications, and, in a section that is alone worth the price of the books for supporters, their effects on our current worldview. Silva also delves deeply into the evidence for crop circles' authenticity. In arguing that they are trans-human events, he discusses the role of electromagnetism and its effects, UFO phenomena and their relation to crop circles, the relationship between crop circles and healing, evidence supporting psychic ability, and language's ability to affect information consciously and subconsciously (this section is sure to stimulate those who suspect that crop circles are a hoax). Readers may be inspired to reexamine preconceived ideas, as Silva's explanations are detailed and well researched and avoid technical jargon. Footnotes and an extensive bibliography encourage further exploration. Recommended for psychic phenomena or metaphysical and New Age collections in public libraries, and for collections including contemporary works on controversies in science and mysticism.

Dictionary of Earth Mysteries
by Janet Bord, Colin Bord

Dictionary of Earth Mysteries

This comprehensive A to Z of ancient and modern mysteries answers many of the questions that have puzzled us over the years, such as: why stone circles were built and what they were used for; where ley lines are sited and how they affect us; the significance of the Green Man; the ancient fire festivals; and how earlights appear.

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ancient Earth Mysteries
by Paul Devereux

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ancient Earth Mysteries

The illustrations are stunning, the text well researched, well written and with some subtle tongue in cheek observations as the author debunks some myths and adds depth to others. It is one of those books one wants to dip into again and again and each time some new knowledge emerges. It is made to be really used too. The book is so robustly put together it will probably end up as a family heirloom.

Earth Memory: Sacred Sites, Doorways into Earth's Mysteries
by Paul Devereux

Earth Memory: Sacred Sites, Doorways into Earth's Mysteries

Comprehensive look at the Earth Mysteries and their relationship to the sacred sites of Europe and America. This ground-breaking book which ties in with the BBC autumn programme, uses practical, world-wide examples of ancient sites to show that it is possible to reach a new understanding of Gaia, the living planet.

Ancient Inventions
by Peter James, Nick Thorpe

Ancient Inventions

Ancient Inventions is thoroughly researched and profusely illustrated; it is doubtful that anyone could examine it without coming away enlightened in one of its broadly ranging areas. This work will be used as much for its historical information and accounts of ancient daily life as it will be for recreational reading.

A knowledge of classical mythology is indispensable in understanding and appreciating much of the great literature, sculpture, and painting of both the ancients and the moderns. Unless we know the marvelous stories of the deities and heroes of the ancients, their great literature and art as much later work down to the present day will remain unintelligible. Includes both major and minor characters from Greek and Roman mythology, place names, symbols, allusions in literature, etc.

The Greek Myths
by Robert Graves

The Greek Myths

Endymion, Pelops, Daedalus, Pygmalion -- we recognize the names, but what are the stories behind these and other familiar gods from the Greek pantheon -- names that recur throughout the history of European culture? Drawing on an enormous range of sources, Robert Graves has brought together elements of these myths in simple narrative form. He retells the adventures of the most important gods and heroes of the ancient Greeks. His work has become the reference for the serious scholar as well as the casual inquirer.

Mythology
by Edith Hamilton

Mythology

Edith Hamilton loved the ancient Western myths with a passion - and this classic compendium is her tribute. "The tales of Greek mythology do not throw any clear light upon what early mankind was like," Hamilton explains in her introduction. "They do throw an abundance of light upon what early Greeks were like - a matter, it would seem, of more importance to us, who are their descendents intellectually, artistically, and politically. Nothing we learn about them is alien to ourselves." Fans of Greek mythology will find all the great stories and characters her - Perseus, Hercules, and Odysseus - each discussed in generous detail by the voice of an impressively knowledgeable and engaging (with occasional lapses) narrator. This is also an excellent primer for middle - and high-school students who are studying ancient Greek and Roman culture and literature.

D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths
by Ingri D'Aulaire, Edgar Parin D'Aulaire

D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths

No education is complete without a large slice of Greek mythology. And there's no better way of meeting that literary quota than with the D'Aulaires' book. All the great gods and goddesses of ancient Greece are depicted in this big, beautiful classic, lovingly illustrated and skillfully told. Young readers will be dazzled by mighty Zeus, lord of the universe; stirred by elegant Athena, goddess of wisdom; intimidated by powerful Hera, queen of Olympus; and chilled by moody Poseidon, ruler of the sea. These often impetuous immortals flounce and frolic, get indiscreet, and get even. From petty squabbles to heroic deeds, their actions cover the range of godly - and mortal - personalities.

"This is the authors' answer to the need they found in their teaching experience for easy versions of Greek hero tales, and the result is most successful . . . vigorous and appealing. This large format book provides a quick, brightly illustrated introduction to the ancient Greek gods and goddesses. Beginning with Gaia, Uranus, and the Titans, Aliki chronicles the rise and fall of Cronus and the defeat of the Titans by the new gods (Zeus and company), whom she introduces individually. The latter section, which comprises two-thirds of the book, will prove useful in libraries as a clear, simple overview of the more familiar gods and goddesses. The artwork varies in quality from the well-imagined scenes showing Gaea growing out of "a dark space named Chaos" to the awkward and slightly comical look of the scenes in which Cronus swallows his children and disgorges them. A Greek dramatist might have advised that those actions should take place offstage, to be reported by the players. While not a source for storytellers, this will prove useful in libraries with a demand for basic information on the gods and goddesses at the primary-grade level.
