Zionism
A plan or movement of the Jewish people to return from the Diaspora to Palestine.
Zion is the Jewish people as a group, or the Jewish homeland as a symbol of Judaism.
Zionism originated aimed at the re-establishment of a Jewish national homeland and state in Palestine. It is now concerned with the development and support of Israel.
Few national movements have transformed the history of a people as radically as Zionism changed Jewish history over the past century. Initially it was dismissed or opposed by many Jews, and represented only one of several Jewish political movements. After the catastrophe of European Jewry, however, Zionism was regarded by most Jews as a symbol of hope for their continued existence.
